THE BUILDING

* An Exceptional Address Steeped in History

Located in the heart of Old Montreal, La Caserne stands as one of the neighborhood's most remarkable historic buildings. Originally constructed in 1861 by the Religieuses hospitalières de Saint-Joseph and designed by renowned architect Victor Bourgeau, the property was initially intended as a military barracks for British troops during the American Civil War. Its solid construction, grand proportions, and timeless character make it a rare and distinguished residential offering today.

* From Industrial Landmark to Architectural Icon

Following its military use, the building was converted into a warehouse and, starting in 1870, occupied by tableware importer John L. Cassidy. Over time, his company came to occupy nearly the entire structure, which he acquired in 1963, preserving its industrial character and original architectural features.

* A Prestigious Residential Transformation

In 1977, the Société immobilière des Cours Le Royer purchased the building and undertook an ambitious conversion, creating the upscale residential condominium complex now known as La Caserne. This thoughtful transformation preserved the original masonry, soaring ceilings, and dramatic windows, giving each residence a unique blend of historic charm and contemporary luxury.
